We started lēf Farms to put a little fresh thinking behind how New England gets its produce. We wanted to give people a way to get incredibly fresh, tasty greens that are carefully grown in our local farm just across town, not clear across the country. So they can arrive on your dinner plate within 24 hours of harvest, filled with more flavor, freshness and nutrients than you’ve ever experienced before.
Where our farm and 75,000-sq. ft. hydroponic greenhouse facility now stand was once a plot of land most people considered unusable. But we felt it had the potential to become the home of the freshest and tastiest greens in New England.
Our President and CEO, Henry Huntington is part of three generations that helped build his family’s local farm business, Pleasant View Gardens, into one of the most successful horticultural operations in the Northeast. We’re talking 40 years of success in managing market relations, a broker network, and various distribution channels. And through extensive research and development into the best plant genetics and marketing, PVG developed Proven Winners®, the world’s #1 plant brand, along with the wildly successful Proven Selections® and Savor™ Edibles & Fragrants.
Our 14 acres of greenhouse production and millions of plants sold every year, fueled by our state-of-the-art greenhouses and advanced growing practices, has paved the way for lēf Farms to be the source of the best greens in New England.
WHAT MAKES LĒF DIFFERENT
Most of the salad greens we all eat – over 95% of them in fact – come from California, Arizona, or Mexico. That means your greens spend up to seven days in a truck before they get to your store and then your plate. Sound fresh? No.
We’ve spent years researching and culling over 100 varieties of textured, flavorful, delicious greens down to our unique blends. And every delicious morsel of lēf produce is grown on our own state-of-the-art hydroponic farm that’s busy growing all year ‘round. We use a precision-controlled, growing system that uses less water, and adjusts to the changing New England seasons. And our salad greens never touch a chlorine bath, a pesticide spray, or even human hands, so they have a delicious flavor that’s delicate, tender, and tasty – whether you enjoy them in the Summer or the dead of Winter.
Since fresh greens aren’t really fresh unless they’re eaten right after they’re harvested, we strive to get our greens into your hands within 24 hours of when they’re picked. By harvesting our greens in a cooler at 35°F, we rapidly remove heat and lock in the fresh taste, increasing post-harvest performance, extending shelf life, and preserving the deliciousness. So every bag of delicious lēf Farms greens is as fresh, crisp, and delicious on your plate as it was in our greenhouse.
COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABLE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM
We are invested in healthy customers, a healthy community, and healthy environment. All delicious lēf produce is grown in the heart of New England, on our family-run hydroponic farm. So we look at New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachussets, Maine, Connecticut, and New York as our neighbors. That close proximity eliminates the wasted fuel, energy, and time required to truck greens in from the other side of the country. And it supports the local economy and food supply chain by relying on local resources. So when you buy lēf salad greens, you, too are supporting the area economy.
GOOD TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Being kinder to the environment is also a big part of the fresh thinking at lēf Farms. Everything we do is geared to minimize our impact on the environment. Being local means that every delivery of lēf greens essentially eliminates a 3,000-mile semi-truck journey bringing greens in from the West Coast. That’s a healthy amount of savings in terms of fossil fuel consumption and pollution.
You’ve seen the word “organic” on greens and other produce. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Our farm is 100% hydroponic, which translates to better food safety, more consistent high quality, and a more sustainable environment than organic growing can produce.
You won’t find inefficient use of resources, fertilizers, or chemicals anywhere on our farm, either. We employ advanced growing techniques to produce more with less. Our hydroponic farm uses nearly 90% less water than traditional farming. By capturing and recycling our water and nutrients we can effectively manage our plant health while minimizing waste and runoff.
Did we mention that we’re also pesticide-free, use only non-GMO seeds, and only use growing media that can be composted instead of heading to a landfill?
All that cleanliness means there’s no need to pre-wash our greens, and our packages use 90% less plastic than clamshells. We don’t put them through chlorine rinses, and our harvests are all hands-free – so the only hands that touch your delicious lēf greens are yours.
We’ve also reduced our carbon footprint substantially by collecting our heating system emissions and reusing the CO2 as food for our plants. That not only converts bad gas into good, it also allows us to reduce the amount of heat and light energy needed to grow our greens.

Did you know that more than 95% of the greens most people eat come all the way from California, Arizona and Mexico? That’s not exactly nearby, nor is it a recipe for freshness. Even many so-called “local” greens are really West Coast-grown — they just get new packaging slapped on at an East Coast repacking operation. After they’ve taken a long ride in the back of a shipping truck.
We think greens need to be grown where they’ll be eaten, so they hit your plate at the peak of freshness. That’s why all lēf greens are hydroponically grown right here in the heart of New England. They’ll get to you within 24 quick hours of being harvested. And they’ll change your perception of just how fresh, healthy and flavorful local greens can actually be.
